What is a noun?

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea. Some of the things named by nouns can be seen; some cannot. 

Kinds of Nouns

1. A common noun is a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea. Most nouns are common nouns. Common nouns are general things.

 Example:  man, town, bag, cow

2. A proper noun is the name of a particular one or specific names. 

For example, a restaurant is a common noun; Beach Spot Restaurant is a proper noun. Proper nouns always start with capital letters. 

Example:  Justin, Paris, Eiffel Tower, Monday, Beach Spot Restaurant

3. A concrete noun names a thing that can be seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched. 

Example:  boy, rock, paper

4. An abstract noun names an idea, feeling, quality, or characteristic.

Example:  trust, fear, happiness, internet, loyalty

5. A collective noun is a word that names a group of individual people or things.

Example: army, flock, bunch, herd, litter

6. Compound NounsA compound noun is made up of two or more words. 

Example: post office, baseball, mother-in-law

7. A singular noun names one person, place, thing, or idea. 

Example: A boy plays football in the playground. (singular noun)

8. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

Example: Many boys are playing football now. (plural noun)

9. Countable nouns are nouns that can be counted.

Example: an apple, two apples, three apples, etc.

10. Uncountable nouns are nouns that cannot be counted.

Example: air, rice, water, paper, gold etc.

Uncountable nouns have a singular and some uncountable nouns are abstract nouns such as advice and knowledge.
